A wig is an excellent accessory for those who want to change their looks by styling them with different costumes and those who suffer from hair loss and want instant head-full-of-hair looks. Due to its versatile utility, it has gained traction in recent past years. From brunette bobs to platinum pixies, you can choose any style to enhance your natural look and give a bold twist finesse. Moreover, it is not only very convenient to wear but is also easily maintainable. Amongst various ways to maintain a wig, washing is the best way that one can use. But people are often in a state of bewilderment about the correct procedure and technique to wash it at home because they obviously do not want to damage it through silly washing mistakes.
Moreover, a good wig is expensive, and a minor error could make it more expensive. So let’s save money and wigs by digging into the right ways to wash the wig at home. Let’s Go!
Step 1: Comb Gently To Detangle Any Knots
The First step to washing your wig is gently combing it to detangle the knots if any. Always start combing from the ends and then proceeds towards the upward side. The combing will help with easy detangling, losing the knots, and less unrooting of the wig hair. However, if you have curly wigs, use a wide-toothed comb, and if your wig is straight or wavy, try using a wire wig brush.
Step 2: Fill Your Tub With Water & Add 3-4 Drops Of Shampoo
The second step is to fill your tub, bucket, sink, or basin, whatever is comfortable to you, with tepid water and squeeze into it 3-4 drops of good quality shampoo, depending on the type of your wig. For instance, if your wig has been dyed, try a color-safe shampoo instead, and if you are washing a curly wig, use a shampoo made for curly hair. Never apply the shampoo directly on the wig hair strands. Also, avoid using 2-in-1 shampoos+ and conditioner hair products, as this will not properly clean your hair. Instead, go for shampooing and conditioning step by step.
Step 3: Now, Turn The Wig Inside Out And Soak It In The Water
After preparing the water by adding shampoo, soak the wig in the water by turning it inside out. Leave the wig strands hanging in the water. Let it soak the shampoo for a few minutes to cleanse the dirt. Turning the wig inside out will improve the cleaning as the shampoo will reach the base of the wig cap, where the most dirt, oil, and sweat accumulate. Also, give the wig a gentle stir from time to time to help the wig get cleansed better. Let it soak in the shampoo for a few minutes to purge the dirt, and then give it a swirl again. Refrain from thrashing the wig too much. It would let to the tangling of the strands.
Step 4: Rinse The Wig With Normal Water To Wash The Shampoo Off
The next step involves rinsing the wig with running water to wash the shampoo off. Wash it till all the shampoo is gone. After that, let lightly pat the wig with dry and clean water to remove the excess water to make it ready for the next step. Don’t use force while using the towel to pat the wig dry. Now remove the towel and lightly shake the wig to let the strands loose free a little bit.
Step 5: Apply Conditioner And Leave It On For 10-15 Min
After you have light-handily pat-dried the wig, apply a good conditioner and finger comb. If your wig is a ventilated or lace front wig, do it carefully to avoid the wig cap. The wig hair strands are knotted onto the lace. If you apply conditioner to them, the knots will come off, and the strands will fall out. Knotting should not be a problem with a wefted and regular wig because the fibers are sewn on instead. Leave the conditioner for 10-15 min before washing it off.
Step 6: Wash The Conditioner Off And Towel Dry The Wig
After 10-15 min of applying the conditioner, it is time to wash it off. The leave-on time will make the moisturizer penetrate deep into the wig hair and hydrate it well. Start washing it with slow-running water by swirling and turning the wig to both sides. Do it with a gentle hand and towel dry it after the conditioner has been washed off properly.
Final Step: Sparingly Apply Some Good Hair Serum On The Wig
The final is to take care of the wig is to sparingly apply some good hair serum while the wig hair strands are still wet. This step has to be done after gently pat-drying the hair after the conditioning step. Hair serum gives extra shine and nourishment to the strands, making them look healthy and beautiful. Blow dry the wig if you want to style it, but be mindful of the extra heat.

To wrap it up -Washing a wig in the right way at home is a simple yet careful process. All you have to do is wash, rinse, condition, and serum it following the above step. And you are all set to step out in elegance, flaunting your wig hair which is very hard to distinguish from natural hair.
