How Should a Newbie Wear a Wig? [A How-To Manual]

Have you ever wondered how that happens overnight when you see someone daily with short and rough hair, and suddenly the next day, their hair is long and shiny with beautiful bangs? If not, then it’s time you know how it happened. It’s not magic. It’s a wig. And if you are someone who already knows about wigs and has already given thought to trying them out, but the idea of its tedious and technical application kept you out, then this blog is for you. Of course, putting on the wig for the first time comes with many questions and doubts. But once you get your way, it’s fun to apply and use as an accessory. The wig will spice up your fashion statement.

So let’s start with the “How” of wearing a wig if you want to learn from the basics and are an amateur in this field.

  1. Choose Your Wig

Before we start with the step-by-step guide, let us give you some basics about wig types. There are three major types of wigs: A full lace wig, a partial or front lace, and a non-lace made from three different materials, i.e., animal hair, human hair, and synthetic hair. If you want a natural-looking hairline and a realistic look full lace wig is the best option, but it is a bit expensive and difficult to maintain. However, depending upon the materials and types, every wig type has pros and cons, so make sure you buy the wigs that suit you the best.

  1. Prep Your Head And Hair

After you have chosen your wig, it’s time to apply it to your head. And for that, you have to prep both your head and hair. This step is very crucial because it will decide your whole wig look. So do it adeptly. If you have long hair, separate it into two parts and twist it into either plate style or cross them up behind the head. You can also create a tight and flat-looking bun. Now fix them with the booby pins so as not to let your hair come out loose from any side. If you have short hair, pin them away from the hairlines. You have to ensure that your hair looks as flat as possible and away from the hairline to make the wig application smooth and end it with finesse.

  1. Clean The Area Around Your Hair Lines

After you are done arranging your hair, wipe the areas around your hairline with cotton-dipped alcohol to remove any excess dirt and oil, as this will help the adhesive tape or glue to stick better to your skin. Now apply scalp protector to the areas surrounding the scalp. A scalp protector comes in the form of cream, gel, and spray. If you have sensitive skin, this will protect you from skin irritation, redness, or any other damage that could be manifested from the glue or adhesive tape application. This step is necessary because it could save you from any unforeseen skin damage.

  1. Put On A Wig Cap

The next step involves putting on a wig cap. You can use a skin-toned nylon wig cap or a net wig cap. If you want to camouflage your skin tone, you can opt for skin-toned cap mimics, and if you wish for your wig cap to be more breathable, you can go for a net wig cap. Apply the wig cap gently on the head with simultaneous stretching. Ensure the wig cap covers your hairline perfectly and hides your hair well. Now secure it firmly with wig pins or bobby pins. If you have short hair, you can ignore the ‘securing with bobby pins’ steps.

  1. Apply The Glue Or The Adhesive Tape

The next step involves the application of wig glue or adhesive tape. First, dip a small brush into the glue and apply it around your hairline. Next, you can use glue and cover the edges of the wig cap to ensure that it doesn’t slip when you put on the wig. After you have done applying the glue, please wait for a few minutes to let it dry out. After the glue has dried out, it is ready for the next step. Also, tap it along your hairline if you use adhesive tape with double-sided strips. Leave a little space between each strip of tape to let your hair breathe properly. Moreover, you do not need to cover the entire scalp line; you can choose the area to put the wig in place properly.

  1. Put On The Wig

Hold the wig from the sides and put it gently on the head. Lay it down on the scalp by adjusting it to cover the whole of your head perfectly. While doing this, ensure that you keep the side edges of the wig away from the adhesive so that it doesn’t stick before you are ready. Take your time to adjust the wig before adhering it to the glue or adhesive. After you are done with the wig, adjust your scalp and gently release the edges, so they get glued and fixed on the scalp. Next, do the securing of the wigs by using a fine-toothed comb to press down the front edges of the wig gently. If you’re using a lace wig, ensure the lace edges are smooth against your head, making a natural hairline.

  1. Secure The Wig

Secure the front end and wait 15 mins to set, then secure the back end and again wait 15 mins to let it set. You can also use booby pins to make your wig feel more secure. Place wig pins through the top of your wig, and hook them into your wig cap and hair underneath. Also, try this toward the middle to ensure they aren’t visible. After the wig is secured, look out for visible dried glue. Remove the residue by gently rubbing the area with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. If you didn’t get the wig placement right on the first try, you could retry it. Detach it by gently rubbing a Q-tip dipped in an alcohol solution and retrying it.
